April13th - 14th 2024
Raíces fluidas ; fluid roots
April13th - 14th 2024
Opening reception: April 13th 5pm- late
An intentional exhibition honoring community and roots.
In the book, Plata y plomo: Una historia de arte y drogas (i)licitas en Colombia de Santiago Rueda, I came across this quote by Fernando Mercado:
Nos olvidamos del hueco por un rato. Pero el hueco está allí, y eso no llena el hueco en realidad. Metemos drogas o licor, pero no para llenarlo, es más bien para no sentir el vacío del hueco… le falta algo. Comida, diría yo. Pero, ¿qué clase de comida? Alimentos para el alma.
We forget about the hole for a bit. But the hole is there, and in reality that doesn't really fill the hole. We use drugs or liquor, but not to fill it, it’s rather to not feel the emptiness of the hole... something is missing. Food, I would say. But what kind of food? Food for the soul.
This is a snippet of the whole but what I want to focus on is his simple but revolutionary solution to filling these holes within us through soul food. I concentrated and threw myself into what that meant, not just for Colombians, but what that meant for me in that moment and what that meant within my craft and artistic journey. I am not innocent of using substances to survive and function in our reality but- what other elements and sources of energy can we use to actually fill these holes? How can we create energy and give energy through our work? How can we build community, honor community? How do we create intentional events, accessible and sustainable, to share joy and intellect? This wants to be a space to share ideas of community, how to build, how to honor, how to sustain, how to educate. This project started in grief and transformed in something more and I want to honor that arc—

My hopes for this workshop is to really just provide a space where we can be vulnerable about our creative insecurities, I want to share the resources I have used, the tools that have helped me get to this point. As a working artist it’s hard to be uncompromising with my art and I forget to feed that energy because I am allowing my energy to go to other things. I am currently practicing being uncompromising with my work, doing work that makes sense for me and being on a path that makes sense for me.
I have the opportunity to share the space with Kristal Uribe and tori Husain, both apart of the exhibition and have been such pillars in my journey creating this… I find that these two creatives feed their creative energy in such a beautiful way and they’re also gonna speak on their journeys and what their soul food consists of.***
This workshop goes in hand with the intention of this pop up which is to create collective, creative energy and to learn how to keep feeding that collective energy and why it's so important to do so. We will be symbolically and physically feeding our creative soul.
There will be three mini lectures, each about 30 minutes long, during which drinks and food will be passed around. Each lecture, presented by one of the artists in the show, will be speaking on the subject and allowing space for your thoughts and questions.
After the event, all the collective information will be digitally archived and made available to you as a source pool to go back to in times of need.
This is for any working artist/ creatives, specifically our BIPOC community, who may be experiencing a lull in their work, who no longer feel motivated to create, who forgot how to feed that creative energy or don't know how. This is also for those who are looking to meet and speak to other creatives and hone in on that energy for inspiration and motivation to keep creating. This is a safe space to share ideas and projects!!! Step into your power!!!
